We are inviting you to participate in Hakula Matata Ambassador, an anthology for by young Zimbabweans throughout the world. Read the summary below so that you understand the background behind the anthology for teens (13-19).

What is an Anthology

An anthology is a collection of poems, songs or stories grouped together either by the writer or an editor or compiler.

Economic migration has had a negative impact on our community leading to a devastating fragmentation of homes and families . Whilst parents can share the benefits of growing up surrounded by family members and living in close knit communities, teens in the diaspora cannot relate. However, having a platform to talk about their challenges, hopes and dreams can be a good starting point in realizing their identity.Teens in the diaspora struggle to understand their roots and culture and are caught between two completely different worlds which is a source of conflict between them and their parents or guardians.

On the other hand, there are teenagers who were separated from their parents as a result of Economic migration and were left back in Zimbabwe. Though they have a solid understanding of their roots and culture, they were not spared from the devastating effects of Economic migration. They were forced into maturity because the absence of their parents in most cases meant children had to look after other children. This caused resentment towards parents as some of the children felt that their parents were not trying hard enough to be reunited with them. The strict immigration rules further complicated things by making it difficult for parents to travel frequently to visit their children or bring them over to join them in the diaspora.

Economic migration also saw led to a lot of divorces and per usual the people affected most by the breakdown of marriages are the children. The divorces then forced children to be brought up by extended family or step parents which is without its own challenges.  The challenges faced by these children affected them psychologically and, in most cases, stopped them from performing to their full potential academically. Some of them sadly got themselves involved in lawlessness i.e., prostitution, crime and drugs for comfort. Some unfortunately went on to commit suicide.

Some of the children against all odds survived the storm and lived to tell the story. The resilience they showed in facing and dealing with these challenges is what this book aims to portray.  We hope that by sharing their stories, these resilient youths will be a source of inspiration and strength to other children who find themselves in the same predicament or have already gone through the same but are finding it difficult to cope and carry on. In most cases parents are oblivious to the harsh truth of the challenges their children will be facing. The children's stories can be used as a learning tool for parents to have a better understanding of how much of a negative impact Economic migration has had on their children . We hope the enlightenment will then help parents to minimize the pressure and challenges Economic migration has imposed on children.

Children who never left Zimbabwe, can also share their stories of how they feel about where they come from and the dynamics of their situation.
